Nadia Comaneci (Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej currently Onesti) Romanian Gymnast born on November 12, 1961. She was the first Romanian to be awarded a score of 10 at the Olympic event. Bela Karrolyi, an Romanian gymnastics instructor who later became Comaneci's coach, first discovered Comaneci at the age of six. Comaneci participated for the first time at the national junior championships, placing 13th. In the following year, she won the title of champion. In her 1972 first international competition in an preolympics junior event for nations in the Communist bloc, she was awarded three gold medals. Then in 1973 and 1975, she won named the all-around Junior Champion. At her first competition as a senior in 1975 she bested the Russian Lyudmila Turishcheva who was a five-time European champion, winning four gold and one silver medal.
